A German Pope
Martin Luther must be rolling in his grave. When I lived in Buffalo, there were lots of German Catholics (and lots and lots of Catholics in general). One of my favorite Buffalo stories was when I heard the name Father Goldberg -- a good German name which we think of as Jewish.The first German pope was Pope Gregory V in 996. Here are all the German Popes.
Ratzinger is notoriously conservative. This doesn't bode well, but hey, its only the pope.
