Newsmaker of the Year is Maher Arar. Don't know who he is? In 2002, US officials detained Arar at JFK, alledging that he was involved with al-Qaeda (he is, by all reports, a mild mannered, hard-working engineer and naturalized Canadian citizen). Arar was secretly deported to Syria, where he was held without charge and tortured for more than a year. He's been fighting the system that did this to him since his release. Interesting choice, especially as it relates to Time in the US picking C Plus Augustus as its Man of the Year.
