Canadian Newsmaker of the Year

Time Canada's Newsmaker of the Year is Maher Arar. Don't know who he is? In 2002, US officials detained Arar at JFK, alledging that he was involved with al-Qaeda (he is, by all reports, a mild mannered, hard-working engineer and naturalized Canadian citizen). Arar was secretly deported to Syria, where he was held without charge and tortured for more than a year. He's been fighting the system that did this to him since his release. Interesting choice, especially as it relates to Time in the US picking C Plus Augustus as its Man of the Year.
